The procedure for implant treatment

After a comprehensive consultation, examination and the necessary X-rays, the following steps are necessary in order to obtain a perfect dental restoration:

  • Placement of the implant under local anaesthetic
  • The healing time in the lower jaw is at least 6 weeks and in the upper jaw at least 12 weeks. Healing may be impaired or implantation impossible for heavy smokers or in the case of severe general diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, liver and kidney diseases, tumour diseases with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Consult your dentist. Patients often compare the healing phase with that following tooth extraction. Mild painkillers are usually taken once the local anaesthetic wears off. In rare cases implants fail to heal and are rejected by the body.
  • Following the healing period, an impression is taken for the individual dental restoration.
  • On completion, the restoration is adapted by the dentist and is secured firmly and safely. It is then possible to bite powerfully with the new teeth. In order to avoid the risk of periimplantitis - inflammation of the bone around the implant, similar to periodontitis affecting the natural tooth - good dental hygiene should be ensured at all times. For with thorough care and regular professional dental cleaning, an implant can last a lifetime.
